Come Out And Gallop For A Great Cause
Gallop 4 the Greenways is an annual fundraising event to support our growing network of pedestrian and bicycle trails. The 5th annual Gallop 4 will be held in conjunction with the Down by the River concert, staged at Reserve Avenue on May 14th, 2011. The race and walk will be run on Roanoke River Greenway. Mark your calendars today and join us in supporting one of the most important quality of life assets in the Roanoke Valley.
Thanks To Your Support, We’re Making Progress
Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and to the more than 2300 runners and walkers who have taken part, the Gallop has raised over $120,000 in the past four years. In 2010 there were four ribbon cuttings for sections of Roanoke River Greenway. Gallop funds were used for two of these sections, the one in front of Roanoke Memorial Hospital and the one in Vic Thomas Park. This year Gallop funds will go to the Bridge the Gap campaign to finish Roanoke River Greenway between Salem and Roanoke for a continuous 18 miles of trail.
Pathfinders for Greenways
Net proceeds from the event go to Pathfinders for Greenways, a local non-profit charitable organization. Pathfinders members volunteer 5000 hours each year to maintain existing trails, and build new greenways throughout the Roanoke Valley in accordance with the Conceptual Greenway Plan. Membership in Pathfinders is open to anyone interested in lending a hand with construction or maintenance projects, promotional efforts, or fundraising. Contributions to Pathfinders for Greenways are tax deductible and can be mailed to P.O. Box 8553, Roanoke, VA 24014. For more information, or to join Pathfinders, please visit their website.
Why Are Greenways So Important?
Greenways improve the quality of life in a community by providing recreational opportunities, routes for commuting to work, and venues for exercise, while promoting the preservation of natural areas that might otherwise be lost to development. Greenways also play an important role in economic development by aiding in recruitment efforts and promoting a healthy workforce. We’re committed to our local greenways, and we believe that completion of the Conceptual Greenway Plan will be a vital catalyst for change in the Roanoke Valley. You can do your part to make the plan a reality by participating in the 2011 Gallop 4 the Greenways. We look forward to seeing you there.
